Great Outdoor Adventure Day
Known as GOAD (Go-Add) for short, this fun event blends environmental education and recreation in equal measure. People of all ages participate in bike tours, kayak excursions, bird watching programs, cast-netting demonstrations, saltwater touch tank programs, and much more! The annual Great Outdoor Adventure Day was held on Saturday, March 1. The event was a great success, with many more visitors this year than last. There was an increased focus this year on nature-based recreational activities, with the ultimate goal of introducing people to the enjoyment that comes from spending time with family and friends in a natural setting. Hundreds of visitors got to experience kayaking...trail bicycling...hiking...birding...nature observation...cast netting...fishing...and much more.
The young and young-at-heart enjoyed meeting local pirate Captain Johnny O and his band of pirates as they explained that nature, and not gold, are the real treasure to be had. Live Florida folk music by Tom Shed entertained park visitors. A solar observation display, courtesy of the Everglades Astronomical Society, also drew many curious park visitors.
We're already in the planning stages for the 2009 Great Outdoor Adventure Day! We hope to add several new attractions next year, including sessions on nature photography and nature-based artwork. We also will be searching for additional sponsors to help support the event financially. If you or your business is interested in becoming a Great Outdoor Adventure Day sponsor, please email Brie Ochoa or give her a call at 239-463-4588 to find out how you can participate.
